Hello Friends, Wa goin’ on?
I just wanted to share a quick post about my recent time out of the office visiting the Tapir Crossing, situated on the Cuyuni River out here in the middle of nowhere. It’s about 30km from the Aurora gold mine and our company operates a barge at the crossing.
This allows us to move stuff through the trail – and everything comes through the trail: fuel, food, and supplies. Let’s just say that without this crossing, we won’t be able to operate.
Earlier this week, I took a trip and used it as an opportunity to snap some photos showing a different side of life in the mine.
I must admit that it’s quite strange that although I don’t really like humans (much preferring dogs), I do love talking to strangers, learning their stories and taking their portraits.
One gentleman, in particular, has led a fascinating life having spent most of it working on the water. He is currently an operator on our barge and we spent a good lil while chatting while he imparted some wisdom to me.
Another highlight of the outing was checking out the ‘gas station’ that’s situated a few meters from the crossing. Being a city boy, I’m accustomed to going to Rubis or Shell to fuel up.
Here in the jungle though, many persons travel primarily by boat. So gas stations tend to look a little different, but still perform a key function for life: allowing people to move through the interior landscapes (and breathtaking riverscapes).
We made a quick pit stop to pick up some refreshments, then headed back to camp.
All in all, it was a day wellspent out of the office.
Until next time,
Damion
