Georgetown from Above

Here’s a quick post to share a few aerial photos of Georgetown and its environs. It occurred to me as I was putting this together just how quickly time flies and how pretty soon, our little GT skyline and landscapes may look very different than it does now.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Guyana, South America
  • Population: 786,550 (2020)
  • Official Language: English

I suppose that this should come as no surprise because the Georgetown that I grew up knowing is way different from the Georgetown my parents grew up with. Within the past few years alone, our seawall horizon, which was once defined solely by the Pegasus Hotel, has seen some big changes and is likely to keep on evolving.

Personally, I’m looking forward to future development. I can picture Georgetown with a new, modern cityscape that rivals some of the major urban centers. Pipe dream? Perhaps. But a guy can hope, eh.

What I’d like to do is capture this development as it unfolds. Every now and then, I see an old photo of Water Street or Main Street and I’m amazed at how much it has changed. I think another good personal project would be to go out and document what currently is.

Even if I don’t think it’s special now, there’s a good chance that I’ll love those images in 20 years’ time.

Georgetown Back in the Day

I did a quick internet search and found this Guyanese diaspora website that features amazing photos of Guyana back in the 19th and 20th centuries. They have also have a great PowerPoint presentation that you can download! There are some samples below, but be sure to head on over to their website and take a better look.

For other cool photos of Guyana, you can also hop on over to my Instagram page @592pixels!

Until next time.
